Georgia Tech played in the ACC championship game last night because Miami imposed a self ban on themselves and North Carolina was ineligible for a variety of infractions that occurred under Head Coach Butch Davis. The Yellow Jackets were 6-6 heading into the ACC Title Game, but with a loss the would have a losing record overall which would make them ineligible for a bowl game. Prior to the ACC Championship game where Georgia tech would be a underdog the ACC along with Georgia Tech applied for a bowl waiver that would allow them to go to a bowl even with a losing record.
What is wrong with college football? Georgia techs bowl game should have been last night and if they win the continue where as if they lost their season should be finished. Just because they played in a terrible division in the ACC which has been horrific this year where they do not have enough eligible teams fulfill bowl obligations. Let another team from a less highly visible league go to a better bowl. At least they earned the right on the field and to be honest who is going to watch Georgia Tech in any bowl game this season. The number of bowls available is too many and if they would contract some of the less popular bowls then bowl season might be more meaningful.
I am in the minority where the playoff format is not the solution for college football. I believe in the bowl system before the BCS where tradition, pageantry and the bowls were an actual reward for a team having a good season. Alabama and Notre Dame will play January seventh, but for every BCS title game i have watched I would trade that evening for the old system where college football may have split national champions. The debate was better then and so was the football in the games played. Now we have mediocre teams playing in bowl games that are excruciating to watch. Coaches love the watered down bowl system because it is a way to make twenty more programs look better they are and to give fans meaningless banter to discuss with their rivals.
The ACC should stand or excellence and sending a team off to a bowl with a losing record is anything but excellence. I figure they will make a buck or two which makes it alright in John Swofford's eyes.
