Four Corners: NC State Controls ACC After Beating Duke
2. Richard Howell answered the challenge of staying out of foul trouble and impacting this game on the glass. Howell had 16 points, but his 18 rebounds were the statistic that was more meaningful to NC State. This was the smartest game I have watched Howell play for NC State being able to be aggressive on the glass and stay on the floor for 38 minutes committing just two fouls. If Howell can continue to stay out of foul trouble NC state will be difficult to defeat.
3. Dick Vitale was critical of freshman Rodney Purvis early in the game, but this was a game Purvis did not have to score for NC State. He was solid in twenty four minutes knocking down 3-6 shots including a big dunk that blew the roof off the stadium with the crowd reaction. Fellow freshman TJ Warren continued his solid play with 10 points on 4-7 shooting.
4. No one mentions this with NC State, but Lorenzo Brown is a player the Wolfpack cannot afford to lose to foul trouble or injury. Similar to UNC last season with Kendall Marshall, Brown is the engine to this past paced offense. Tyler Lewis saw two minutes of action yesterday and the freshman is not ready for big minutes in the ACC. NC State has wing players to handle the ball, but yesterday the Wolfpack handed out 13 assists all by Lorenzo Brown. Brown did not have a great shooting day, but his defense on Quin Cook and leading the offensive break for key factors in the win.
